This is a great question that we did not get into much detail about. I have a couple of resources for you to check out to get a better visual, but basically there have been 2 types of surface waves identified; Love waves and Rayleigh waves. Surface waves are not usually created by deep earthquakes (those happening deep within the crust) and cause the most damage to the Earth's surface. Love waves travel in a back and forth motion while Rayleigh waves travel in a rolling wave motion.
